5 local nature reserves to visit as David Attenborough turns 100

Lifestyle

Few people have had a greater impact on British culture in recent years than Sir David Attenborough, who turned 100 on 8 May.

With a career spanning seven decades, Attenborough’s passion for the natural world has enriched the lives of millions. His documentaries have brought us never-before-seen footage of wildlife from every continent, educating and inspiring audiences in equal measure.

Fortunately, you do not need to travel to the depths of the ocean or the wilds of Antarctica to immerse yourself in natural beauty and take in impressive flora and fauna.

Keep reading to discover five local nature reserves near Hambledon to visit this summer.

1. St Clair’s Meadow, for the birdwatcher

Spanning 16 hectares of the Meon Valley in Hampshire, St Clair’s Meadow makes for an ideal visit for birdwatchers – or anyone who enjoys a good walk.

In the summer months, kingfishers can be spotted across the site, along with water voles, butterflies, and migratory swifts and swallows.

It is free to enter and open at all times, although online donations are gratefully received. Follow the footpaths or go off-piste, and you will find yourself surrounded by peaceful nature and plenty of seasonal wildlife.

2. Beacon Hill, for the keen walker

On the west side of the South Downs National Park, you will find the 679-foot Beacon Hill, a beautiful 100-acre walking site with much to see for nature lovers.

Beacon Hill has been named a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to its array of unusual plant life and rare butterflies, including the ethereal “chalkhill blue” and brightly coloured “green hairstreak” varieties.

There is a circular walk of just over 11 km to be tramped. It takes you through the village of Exton, past the River Meon, and up to the summit, from which you can see the Isle of Wight. You may even spot the remains of a Napoleonic War telegraph station on the hill!

3. Chappetts Copse, for the peace-seeker

If woodland wandering is more your speed, the Chappetts Copse Nature Reserve – which has been managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust since 1981 – is a lovely day trip.

In May and June, this reserve boasts a stunning promenade of wild orchids, along with its population of ancient ash and beech trees, which of course stand year-round.

You can visit at any time of the year if you need a dose of tranquillity, are a wildlife enthusiast, or simply enjoy a good walk. The Trust has taken measures to conserve important flora, such as the sword-leaved helleborines, so make sure to follow the marked footpaths on your visit.

4. Butser Hill, for all the family

If you are searching for an easy walk that the whole family can enjoy, Butser Hill Nature Reserve has a short circular stroll that may tick all your boxes.

One of the highest points in Hampshire, Butser Hill allows you to drive up and park near the top, for easy access with little ones. For more of a challenge, you can park at the bottom of Butser Hill and complete the climb on foot.

There is a refreshments kiosk open on weekends, along with toilets. At the top, you can see as far as Petersfield and Surrey – and watch out for the 30 species of butterfly that live in the area, keeping curious walkers entertained.

5. Copythorne Common, for the history boffin

Bordering the New Forest National Park, Copythorne Common is both an area of natural beauty and fascinating history.

As you walk, you may notice undulations in the earth under your feet, made by US soldiers ahead of D-Day. Plus, there are remnants of slit trenches and a site where troops dug a tank into the soil, so there is plenty for history lovers to discover here.

In the summer, wildlife enthusiasts may be able to spot lizards, slow worms, and even adders lying in the sunshine – the habitat is primed for reptiles due to its acidic, dry grassland.

Like Beacon Hill, Copythorne is a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to its amazing wildlife.
